Breathwave ~ Spreading the Medicine
The path of the breath is leading me to become a facilitator

7 minute read
After signing up for my first Breathwave retreat, I unknowingly began embarking on the path of the breath.
The first retreat, Level 1, was all about experiencing the power of conscious connected breathing combined with ceremony, as envisioned by Breathwave’s founder, Robin Clements. The healing and community activated by two breath sessions per day over five days was transformational. We all left the retreat feeling like family. I left feeling something deep in my core starting to shift.
The shift happened quickly, and it wasn't long until signed up for Level 2, the introduction to facilitation. Now, instead of receiving two full breath sessions per day, we gave and received one full breath session for each of the five days, with plenty of guidance and instruction throughout. Every day opened up with an individual movement practice to enliven the body, followed by a short breath session. Robin also reminded us how movement can enliven the breath, and sometimes in his one-on-one sessions he will do a bit of movement with his clients before diving into breathwork.
The Power of Ceremony
A unique aspect of Breathwave is its ceremonial nature. Robin has studied under wise teachers from Native American traditions, and incorporates shamanic elements into the sessions, such as music, bodywork and bioenergy.
Western culture is only realizing the importance of ceremony, as it’s started looking to indigenous cultures for spiritual guidance. Ceremony creates a container in which participants can feel safe and trust the facilitators enough to fully surrender to cathartic experiences.
During sessions, participants activate their body’s intelligence through the breathwork. Letting go of the mind's fear and judgment allows them to fully feel whatever comes up, and fully express whatever the body needs to express. Knowing that they are held in safety and unconditional love by the facilitators, allows participants to grant the same towards themselves. Safety and unconditional love are prerequisites for letting go.
Body Map
Breathwave also distinguishes itself from other types of breathwork with its gentle nature, inviting an engagement level of breathing that is not excessive beyond a normal rhythm. This is highly unlike the intense nature of the Wim Hof method, which has entered mainstream awareness. I spoke in more detail about this in WHY Breathwave.
Due to its gentle nature, the participant aims to create a wave of breath from the bottom of the belly up to the chest on the inhale, and vice versa on the exhale. Blockages in the wave can be identified in the body, and hands-on bodywork by facilitators can place emphasis on these areas, signaling the participant to breathe into them.
Blockages can have strong indications as to the participant’s personality and personal history. For example, not breathing in to the chest signals lack of love or cardiovascular issues. Not breathing into the belly signals digestion or sexual issues. Not breathing into the solar plexus, in-between the chest and belly, signals power struggles.
There is a body map that includes more specific body areas and associated indications. Working with the body map, facilitators can help participants release strong emotions associated with specific life struggles.
Relaxation
Integration is a fundamental philosophy of my existence. Without proper integration, we float around unconsciously, unaware of our past and how it affected us, unaware of our actions in the present and what effects they have on ourselves and others around us. I try to give myself time and space on a regular basis for integration, and even more whenever big events happen that shake me up.
Breathwave philosophy emphasizes integration through relaxation. Every breath session concludes with a deep relaxation period of at least 10 minutes, with calm music and no facilitator intervention, allowing participants the time and space needed to sit with their experience and make meaning of it. Afterwards participants are given time to sit up, then are held space to share and discuss their experience, allowing for further integration.
Law of Mankind
In a moment of big picture integration, on the morning of Day 5, Robin spoke about how he envisions bringing Breathwave to the outside world. He spoke about the course Law of Mankind which provides a template on how to be a sovereign human in the world, using the knowledge of common law. He expanded into a philosophical discourse about what he sees happening in society and the role Breathwave has to play in its evolution.
This particular discourse helped bring my Breathwave experience full circle. I think myself and a lot of people find this path because of a deep dissatisfaction with what's going on in society. Not only have I come to Breathwave to heal myself and people around me of our ills, which are a microcosm of the of society's macrocosmic ills, but so I can find out ways to show up in society in ways that protect myself from its systemic ills; so that I can flourish independently of the system.
Touching the Divine
The above topics are but a mere sneak peek of the richness of the content shared in discourse. This wisdom set the foundation for the transformative experiences to unfold during the retreat. Understand that every individual experience is unique and different. My experience below is shared with a lot of vulnerability, and with respect to my colleagues in the retreat.
The experience that cracked me open during this retreat was receiving Divine Feminine energy. While being facilitated, I experienced nurturing grace and divine beauty in the form of wise soft-spoken words and a firm reassuring touch from a woman who was truly in her power. I was able to fully surrender and receive this physical experience of divinity, allowing me to breathe more deeply and reach a pure ecstatic state of blissful sensations. In the integration discussion, she said she sensed my full surrender which allowed her to find her flow in facilitation. The hour session felt like a few minutes for her.
My experience of the Divine Feminine filled me or unlocked something deep in me. In subsequent sessions I was able to let go and access catharsis with greater ease. In my last received session, I reached a state of bliss where I felt true perfection in the moment. I learned that perfection does exist, and it lives only in the present moment. This epiphany led to me bawling like a baby for several minutes, realizing that I was one of the luckiest people in the world to experience such true divinity, something so few people will ever experience in their lifetimes.
Resilience to Give
Actually, for the past several years I have had the occasional reoccurring thought of being one of the luckiest people in the world - the real "top 1%." I have had a lot of beautiful heart-opening connections and adventures that have filled me up. I have accessed these experiences through following my intuition. My intuition led me to come into a powerful offering as a bodyworker.
The combination of my resilience, intuition and bodywork skills translated well into facilitating breathwork. I facilitated some strong releases for receivers, and received feedback validating that I was on the right path. I still feel shaky in a few aspects, such as using words for guidance, and my ability to evaluate the breath for blockages. But overall I am moving forward from the retreat with few mental obstacles or doubts along the path to becoming a facilitator.
In the Flesh
Technology has physically separated us, and cheapened communication. As a result, we have forgotten how to be in presence with each other and deeply listen. The pandemic has exacerbated these issues, and there has never been greater polarization in society. However, it has also created realization of this scarcity, and is reinvigorating in many the importance of gathering.
Robin is insistent on only teaching Breathwave in-person. He sees this modality as an antidote to these societal ills. It is an opportunity to commune in unity, to heal together. This is not to say there isn't a virtual place for Breathwave - Robin does facilitate online. However, there simply is no substitute for receiving and learning the tools of Breathwave in-person and in community with others, especially for aspiring facilitators.
My in-person experience was priceless and intangible. Learning is done best through experiencing, and I learned as much as I received from the breath. I left Level 2 with inspiration to continue on the path, and the support from community of others walking the same path.
Breathwork is the most powerful medicine that the world needs right now. It is too different to compare to plant medicine, however, it can be said that our breath is our innate power and activates the inner healer that is in all of us. Breathwave is possibly the most beautiful and holistic kind I have come across, but no matter whether you experience this or not, my hope is that you get to experience the medicine of breathwork at some point in your life.
